How do you get born again?
How do you get born again? What exactly does it mean anyway?
Answer
Before we look at the answer to "How does a person get born again?" - let's take a look at the the Biblical definition of these words "born again".
John 3:3
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
I Peter 1:23
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
In these verses the reference to "born again" means to either be "born from above" or to "beget again". It is referring to a birth that is entirely different from the first birth that every human being experiences. In the reference from the book of John, a man named Nicodemus was asking Jesus Christ exactly what this meant. Jesus Christ's response was as follows:
John 3:4-7
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
As you can see from what Nicodemus said, he thought that being born again meant going back into his mother's womb and being "born again". Jesus Christ replied that a person had to be born both of water and "of the spirit". He called the first birth to be "born of water" referring to the water that accompanies the birth of a baby when the mother's water breaks. The second birth he refers to as being born "of the spirit" and this is exactly what being born again means. It is to receive the holy spirit from God which according to the Bible is new and eternal life. Since it is the start of a new life the term that is used is "born again". Additionally this also fits with the definition of being "born from above" since the spirit that is received comes from God.
When a person receives the spirit of God he is then "born again". He or she now has a new Father and that is God. Just as a person's human father passes on life to the baby, so God the Father provides new life via the holy spirit that He gives to the one who is born again. The verse above from I Peter calls this "incorruptible seed" because it cannot ever be lost or corrupted. Being born again is the assurance of eternal life.
So then, how does a person get born again? That is answered in the Book of Romans:
Romans 10:9, 10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation
As the above verses show, in order for a person to be saved or born again, he must first confess with his mouth the Lord Jesus, that is, confess that his Lord will now be Jesus Christ. Secondly he must believe in his heart that God has raised him from the dead. It could not be any simpler. There are no special prayers to be prayed. There is no payment to be made. There is no ritual to be observed. God did not make it difficult for a man or woman to be born again, to receive salvation. It was His son, the Lord Jesus Christ that had to pay the price in order to redeem man.
When a person believes the above verses from Romans, he confesses that he accepts the work that Jesus Christ has done for him. He confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord of his life and he believes that God raised him from the dead. When a person does this, God gives him or her the gift of holy spirit which is to be born again, to be born from above and to have eternal life.
