This teaching looks at John 6 where “bread” is used by Jesus Christ to teach a very simple and powerful truth. When he is asked how people might do the works of God, he tells them to believe on him who God has sent. The context of the chapter is believing on Jesus Christ. The people who are questioning him seem to be only interested in the physical needs that they have whereas Jesus is teaching them about living for the life of the ages. He explains to them how even the manna provided by God to Israel was to teach them that man cannot live by bread alone but by the words spoken by God. God did a miracle to teach them that it was not about what the miracle provided – the bread they could eat – but to learn to trust Him. In John 6 the people are more interested in being fed again rather than learning the lesson to believe on Jesus Christ and to never hunger or thirst (spiritually) again. Manna in the Bible is a type of the coming messiah. The manna fed Israel physically but they still died, Jesus Christ would feed them spiritually so that they would have eternal life. Even though manna came from heaven as well, Jesus Christ was the “true” bread from heaven.
