After a person becomes born again, God expects a believer to grow towards spiritual maturity. As a person grows and matures in his or her spiritual walk, fruit will be produced that is commensurate with the growth. Unfortunately, it seems that this is not the case with many believers. Whereas a person should be growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ, many times he may fall away with the end result that there is no fruit that is produced. Some even go back to the point of needing once again to be fed the very basics of the Christian walk, spiritual pablum so to speak. Though mainstream Christianity seems to think that “falling away” means that a person has lost his salvation, the biblical definition actually refers to those who are not living a fruitful Christian life. Clearly there is no way that a believer can ever lose his salvation. However, a believer can definitely be robbed of the joy, peace, and other fruits that are supposed to be part of the Christian life by not abiding in the work and redemptive work of Jesus Christ. This loss can end up being much more detrimental than people realize for the benefits of service have a bearing on eternal life.
