The opening section of the first chapter of the Book of John has been used to teach varying opinions regarding the nature of Jesus Christ. However, when the section is considered in its simplicity just as it is written, keeping context in mind, it falls out to be rather straight-forward. Here is the basic overview:
John 1:1-13 – This section speaks exclusively of God – the one who has existing since the beginning and whose word has been made known in various ways.
- All things were made by God
- God was the light of all men and nothing could extinguish that light
- John was a man sent by God who according to the prophecies about him would turn the people back to God
- The light of God lights every man which comes into the Word (including Jesus Christ)
- God was in the world, the world was made by him and yet the world knew him not – they refused to acknowledge him
- God came unto his own (Israel) and they just refused to receive him (time and time again)
- Those who received God (ex. Moses, Jacob, Abraham, Noah, David, etc.) were made his children – not by flesh or their own will but by God’s will
John 1:14-18 – And at this point the section introduces Jesus Christ
- Jesus Christ was the word in the flesh
- He had been prophesied about long before John the Baptist
- Grace and truth came by way of Jesus Christ
- No man has ever seen God – Jesus Christ declared him
God in the past spoke by way of the prophets and in other ways and now he would speak by way of his son.
