Though the new testament, specifically those sections addressed to the Body of Christ, does not refer to believers as sheep, the attributes of the shepherd and how he takes care of his sheep are worth noting. Jesus Christ said that he was The Good Shepherd. Shepherds in the east had a very close bond with the sheep that were under their care. They ensured their safety, well-being, peace and prosperity in all areas. Shepherds (good ones) would even risk their lives for their sheep. The Good Shepherd gave his life for his sheep. Jesus said that he was the door of the sheepfold and that his sheep knew his voice. The love and care that Jesus Christ showed to his disciples was exemplary and he taught them how to love in kind – a new commandment, to love like he loved them. Now that the Lord Jesus Christ is in an highly exalted position because of his Father God, he has even more resources and access to love and take care of the people that have been entrusted to his case – the Body of Christ.
