This teaching takes a look at one aspect of the One Body as it is discussed in the church epistles: a metaphor that compares each part (or member) to their function. In the Book of Romans (12:1-8), the correct doctrine concerning this truth is set forth. Each function in the body is vital despite what each member might be doing (regardless of what the world might think about that particular function). God has ensured that each member has been given a vital function. The Scriptures encourage each member to go about the business of their particular function as living sacrifices. In the Book of I Corinthians (12:25-31), there is some reproof given regarding the doctrine of the One Boy – specifically in two areas that the believers were not adhering to the correct teaching:
- A person thinking that their function is not as important as another member in the body
- A person indicating that someone else (and their corresponding function) is not required
Both of these camps were exhibiting unbiblical behaviour. As members, we need to step back and see the great design of the One Body as determined by God and to recognize the value of each person. The end goal of this thinking is that in all things, the glory goes to God.
