This teaching continues to discuss the times during which the Book of 2nd Timothy was written: a time when a great departure from the truth was taking place. Paul had exhorted Timothy to ensure no other gospel was being taught and he had told him about the absolute seriousness of teaching the truth of the Scriptures. In the last days – a phrase that refers to any time there is a departure from the truth – he tells him that men will have a form of godliness. In other words, they will not appear to be dangerous but they are. Timothy is warned to stay away from them. Paul tells Timothy that things are going to get worse and he should take diligent heed to the Scriptures. Instead of hanging out with the largest group or any group for that matter, Timothy is encouraged to give himself to the study and preaching of God’s Word. In closing, he reminds Timothy of the hope that is set before all those who serve the Lord Jesus Christ. He encourages him to stay faithful despite the persecution. The fight is worth more than anyone could imagine.
