Is The World Getting More Evil?

Very often I have heard people make the statement that they cannot believe how evil the world has become, the implication being that the world is becoming more and more evil as time passes. So, “Is The World Getting More Evil?”

To consider a biblical answer to this question, let’s note what it says in the first chapter of Galatians.

Galatians 1:3, 4
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father. [ESV]

Now this verse was written over two thousand years ago by the Apostle Paul – and here he says that Jesus Christ died for our sins so that we could be delivered from the present evil age. Paul referred to the times that he was living in as the “present evil age”. The age that Paul was referring to is the same age in which we are living – and that biblically speaking is referred to as the “present evil age”.

So according to the Scriptures, the age that we live in is an “evil age” and it has not been anything other than that since the Fall of Man. It was Adam’s sin that opened the door for the devil to have rule over the world.

2 Corinthians 4:4
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. [KJV]

Note here the devil is called the “god of this world” – and this title was bestowed upon him by the sin of Adam. If the devil is the “god of this world”, then what sort of age do you think the world is going to be? Well, we already have the answer to that from what Paul wrote , it will be a “present evil age”. It is no worse or no better than it always has been. Sometimes one sort of evil supersedes another – and at other times, some other evil. Sometimes some things improve and at other times, other things improve – but underscoring all of that is that it is a “present evil age”. Note I John.

I John 2:15-17
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. [ESV]

So how do you escape this present evil age? Once again, by believing in Jesus Christ who gave himself for us so that we could be delivered from this present evil age. They only way out is not that the age itself is going to get any more or less evil – but that eventually it is going to pass away along with all it’s evil. For those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their lord, they have already been rescued from this evil age and will enjoy the blessings for eternity to come. Thanks be to God for sending his son so that we could be rescued out of this present evil age
