Why Should I Give God The Glory?

When a blessing comes to a Christian, you will sometimes hear that person say, “Glory to God”. For example, let’s assume he or she just got a job. “Glory to God for that job”. There might be some that say, “Well you would have gotten it anyway because you are qualified. What does God have to do with it.” So, in circumstances such as these “Why Should I Give God The Glory?”

This same issue was something Moses had to warn the Children of Israel about. When he told them about entering the Promised Land, he reminded them of all that God had done for them. He had led them through a terrible wilderness, given them food and water, protected them and done whatever was necessary to care for them. When they would enter the Promised Land, Moses warned them.

Deuteronomy 8:17, 18
Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.’ You shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth, that he may confirm his covenant that he swore to your fathers, as it is this day. [ESV]

It is the natural tendency of man to take pride in his own ability to deal with the issues of life. Moses told them – beware not to think that your own ability and power had gotten you all that you had. He reminded them that it was God who gave them the power to get wealth. All blessings come from God.

Psalm 24:1
The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein. [ESV]

God is the one who made the heavens and earth so there is nothing that man is blessed with that does not originate from God.

Matthew 5:45
So that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. [ESV]

God makes the sun shine on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust. I suspect that the evil and unjust do not take the time to give him the glory for doing all of this. We who believe God should never miss the opportunity to be thankful for all that he does. We do not want to fall into the thinking that the power and the might of our own hands accomplishes all that we need.

So, you fill in a resume and apply for a job. You end up getting that job. Presumably the application was accompanied with prayer and thanksgiving to God but even if it was not, the earth is still the Lord’s and the fulness thereof and it is still God who gives us the power to get wealth, it is still God who blesses the evil and the good and the just and the unjust.
So you have the option when you get that job you wanted, to glorify God or not. Why should I give God the glory? It’s quite simple really. We glorify God in recognition of the truth that it is he who made the heaven and earth, it is he who ensures that the covenant of day and night never ceases for the sake of both the evil and the good, that the rain continues to fall on the just and the unjust and that all blessings that ever come upon us originate from the Almighty God.

I Peter 4:11
If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion forever and ever. Amen. [KJV]
