Did you ever wonder where some of the things that you casually say actually came from? It might surprise you just how evil the origins of some of our popular sayings are. There’s an interesting verse in the Book of Ephesians:
Ephesians 6:12
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
It is worth noting how even what people commonly say show the depth of the spiritual battle that is being waged. Take note of the following expressions:
“It’s not in the cards.” – This is usually an expression to say that things were not meant to be. Isn’t it interesting that if things were to go well the implication is that then “It is in the cards.” In either case the “cards” referred to here are those used by spiritualists to falsely predict the future. The use of cards is an evil art that is condemned by the Word of God. So if it is “in the cards” I would be very careful if I were you.
“Works like a charm.” – Surely everyone has heard this at one time or another – it is usually said when something just works the way it is supposed to. The problem here is that if “charms” actually work they are backed by the forces of darkness. If a charm ever produces any sort of result it is powered by devil spirits at the beck and call of God’s arch enemy. Biblically speaking a charm is not supposed to work – clearly it is an inanimate object. If a charm does produce something then there is devil spirit force behind it. If you’ve got a charm that “works” I would acquaint it with Davy Jones’ locker. (Incidentally some say that Davy Jones is a devil spirit that is in charge of the evil spirits of the ocean depths. Oops!)
“Knock on wood.” – Have you ever said this one? Did you know that it comes from the ancient belief that spirits dwelt in trees and that knocking on their home would bring good luck? The Scriptures clearly declare that any spirit that dwells in a tree originates only from the source of all evil – the devil. Do you really think that he would help you? “Knocking on wood” is a request for help from spiritual wickedness. The tricky thing is that you might just get what seems like “help” for the moment. In the long run, however, you are going to be sorry.
“Stars are aligned.” – Here’s another one that is commonly used to say that things are going just right. “The stars are aligned tonight”. There’s a great record in the Word of God of a king who asked his army to rid the kingdom of all witches, wizards, astrologers, and magicians. Astrology, the so-called false science of using the stars to predict the future, is banished by God to the same pit as charms, tarot cards and crystal balls. Though countless publications promote this evil daily, the Bible warns us to stay clear. The “Daily Star”, “The Weekly Sun” or others like them are the only stars that are aligned in their blatant contradiction of Scriptural truth by the promotion of horoscopes and other such black arts.
Psalms 34:1 declares,
“I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”
Let’s be careful then that our words do not pay homage to the devil.
