People may emulate and consider many wonderful men and women in the Bible: Elijah, Elisha, Abraham, Moses, David, etc. The greatest example for the Christian is Jesus Christ. Paul the Apostle said that he wanted people to imitate him, just as he imitated Christ. He was not referring to still knowing Jesus after the flesh for that would ignore the highly exalted position that Jesus Christ has earned. No, he was referring to the walk of Jesus Christ. It is similar to Peter saying that we should follow his footsteps. The pattern that we are interested in involves things such as:
- to walk in the same faith in God that he had
- to walk in humility and at the same time supreme confidence in God
- to love, forgive and serve like he did
- to live selflessly like he did
- to endure hardship and discomfort for the sake of the Gospel
- to tirelessly preach the Gospel
- to bring deliverance to those in need
We have been given the power and authority to do this – it’s up to us to actually do it.
